In this episode, we addressed the human resources, education, research, and application dimensions of medical informatics with a holistic approach. We also emphasized the interaction between research, education, and service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The interview, the video address of which is provided at the end of the article, generally includes the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Conceptual Framework of Health Informatics and Medical Informatics<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Medical informatics is a multidisciplinary field focused on the generation, management, analysis, and use of biomedical data in decision-making processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The goal is not just to produce technology, but to improve human health; economic benefit alone should not be a sufficient objective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The field is divided into sub-specialties such as clinical informatics, bioinformatics, public health informatics, imaging informatics, and nursing informatics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cThe concepts of &quot;health informatics,&quot; &quot;medical informatics,&quot; and &quot;biomedical informatics&quot; largely overlap.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Historical Development<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">1970s: The introduction of computers into medicine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">1980s: The beginning of medical informatics research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">1990s: Health information systems, hospital information systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">2000s: Electronic health records, e-health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">2010s: Data science, artificial intelligence, analytics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">2020s: Digital health ecosystem, interoperability, security, governance, secondary data usage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Implementation and Infrastructure in T\u00fcrkiye<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Strengths:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">National digital health infrastructures such as e-Nab\u0131z, e-Prescription, and MHRS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Common hospital information systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The technical infrastructure is relatively strong.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Areas for improvement:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Data quality and data governance<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Secondary use of health data<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Strategic integrity and organizational coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Skilled workforce<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Data evaluation centers in hospitals and clear job descriptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cThe &quot;trash in, trash out&quot; principle is highlighted as a critical issue, especially for artificial intelligence and decision support systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Education and Human Resources Problem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">T\u00fcrkiye has master&#039;s and doctoral programs in medical informatics; however, their number and capacity are insufficient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Structural problems within departments (particularly the necessary combination of biostatistics and medical informatics) have limited the development of the field.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Many qualified doctoral graduates cannot find suitable positions in academia or the healthcare system.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">He went abroad,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">They have branched out into different fields,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This has been a loss for the Turkish system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In the US and Europe:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Hospital IT departments are headed by specialists with doctorates.,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Competency-based career frameworks and micro-competencies are being implemented.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In T\u00fcrkiye, however, roles such as data manager, data architect, and clinical computer specialist are not clearly defined.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>\u00a0Assessment and Maturity Models<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">According to assessments by the World Health Organization, the OECD, and other international organizations:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">T\u00fcrkiye has a strong infrastructure.,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">However, the areas of workforce, governance, data-drivenness, and continuous improvement are insufficient.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">There is a significant digital divide among hospitals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Key Outcomes and Recommendations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Strategic integrity must be ensured at the national level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For health informatics:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Clear job descriptions,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Competency-based career paths,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Micro-certification and continuing education models should be developed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Data specialists and medical and health informatics professionals should take active roles in hospitals and universities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The secondary use of health data should be supported within an ethical and safety framework.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Otherwise, there is a risk of &quot;missing the train in digital health.&quot;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Overall Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">T\u00fcrkiye has significant potential and a strong technical infrastructure in digital health. However, for this potential to be transformed into real value... <strong>leadership, governance, skilled workforce, data quality, and strategic coordination.<\/strong> Structural steps must be taken in these areas.
